Taking care of fish habitats

fish-care No Comments »
  1. Choose aquarium size carefully. A 10-gallon tank is a good size to begin with, though the bigger the tank, the easier it is to care for. Keep the fish population within reasonable limits. Allow at least a gallon of water per inch of fish; one expert says that you should have only one big fish or tow or three little fish in a 10-gallon tank.
  2. For the aquarium you need: a hood with a light, a heater, a thermometer, a filter, air pump, a gang valve, airline tubing, gravel, a fishnet, water conditioner, and food.
  3. To set up the tank: (1) rinse it out with tap water; (2) assemble the under-gravel filter and put it in the tank; (3) rinse the gravel (but not with soap or detergent) and add to the tank; (4) set up the air pump, connect the airline tube to the air stem on the filter and to the gang valve; (5) pour in the water and put in water conditioner (in amount suggested on the package); (6) set up the heater, but do not plug it for 15 minutes.
  4. To introduce the fish: place the plastic bag containing the fish on top of the tank water for several minutes. Then open the bag, but leave the fish in it for a few more minutes before removing it.
  5. About one-fifth of the water should be changed once a month.

Fishbowls for Freshwater Nontropical Fish

  1. Fish in fishbowls are not easier to care for than fish in aquariums for tropical freshwater fish, but the initial investment is less.
  2. You can buy bowls from pint-sized to two gallons.
  3. The water is at room temperature, so you can raise only goldfish or Siamese fighting fish.
  4. Siamese fighting fish must be raised alone. You can put one goldfish in a small bowl, up to three in a large one.
  5. Change the water twice a week. The night before you change it, let the new water sit so that the chlorine dissipates.

General Dos and Don’ts

  1. In the first month, test the water every day; after that, weekly. Water temperature of about 74F, works for most fish.
  2. Don’t put the aquarium in direct sun; use a fluorescent light on the tank.
  3. Do not overfeed fish. Feed them once a day, only the amount of food they will eat in about 30 seconds. Otherwise the food and waste material from the fish begin to break down and create toxic byproducts. You can buy slow-release feeder tablets for times when you are away.
  4. If fish get sick, take them to the pet store. Take little fish in a half-filled mayonnaise jar. Take big fish in trash can liners half-filled with water in a five-gallon bucket; blow some air into the bags. Also take a sample of tank water (3-4 oz.).

Discus Fish Feeding - A recipe

fish-care No Comments »

It does not make financial sense for commercial pet food companies to manufacture the best quality food for your discus fish because the ingredients simply cost too much. Therefore, when it comes to discus fish care, preparing your own food is one of the best things you can do for your pets. If you decide to make your own food, you should see a quick improvement in the overall health, color and breeding of your discus fish.

Discus Fish Food Recipe

1 1/2 lb fresh beef heart
1/2 lb shrimp (shelled)
1 bunch of spinach
1 package of unflavored gelatin powder
1 multivitamin tablets (Centrum)

Take the beef heart and trim away all the veins and fat. Use a food processor to mince the beef harts. Place the beef heart in cheese cloth and rinse under cold water. Try to rinse as much of the blood out of the beef heart as possible and squeeze it when you are done. This will help keep your aquarium water clean. Chop up the shrimp now as well. Boil or microwave the spinach until and soft and it up. Put everything you have so far in a bowl and add the gelatin powder. The gelatin will act as a binder and help everything stick together. Now, crush the vitamin tablet and add it to the bowl. Mix thoroughly. Put the mixture into zip lock plastic bags, flatten it out, and put in the freezer. When you are ready to feed to your discus, break off small portions and thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

By making your own food, you have truly taken responsibility for your discus fish care into your own hands. It is really one of the best things you can do for your fish, and doesn’t take much time, since one batch can last for months. If you take the time to make your own fish food, I think you will quickly see an improvement in the health and vigor of your discus fish.

Ask yourself how you want your aquarium to be. The state of your aquarium and the life of your chosen aquatic species will depend on the aquarium setting you will create.

There are several environments to consider for your aquarium. You may want to have a freshwater environment, brackish water, or saltwater environment. If you are just starting to get into this hobby, you may choose to settle with a freshwater aquarium first since this requires easier maintenance compared to others.

When deciding on freshwater environment, you can look up on what form of aquatic life can live and coexist in an aquarium tank filled with fresh water. You cannot put incompatible species all in one tank since they might just be harmful to one another. Once you have thoroughly read about the species you want in your aquarium, resist the impulse to buy them just yet.

You have to prepare your tank first and condition it to the habitual setting of your chosen aquatic species. You basically start with an empty tank, no fish at all, and then gradually set up the water for your fish and other water life forms. Getting the right size for your aquarium is necessary if you have a number of fish. 1 inch of fish for every gallon tank capacity is the rule of thumb for aquarium buffs. Not following this by-rule can result to disappointing outcome, which can dishearten aquarium first timers.

To make your aquarium healthy, live plants should be put in there since they absorb elements that can be harmful to fish. Plants also serve as playgrounds for the fish and provide good supply of oxygen in the tank. A sufficient aquarium light source mounted on top of the aquarium is also needed to maintain plant life.

Having a freshwater tropical fish aquarium is the top choice for people who simply cannot get enough of seeing and looking after assorted aquatic species. Aquariums come in different types whether saltwater or freshwater aquariums.

To set up an aquarium or even get into this hobby is a pleasant activity. You must get familiar with aquarium details first before jumping into owning one. Read as much as you can about aquariums and marine life forms to make this hobby work out for you. You can also get in touch with experts in this field who can guide you through this hobby.

THE AQUARIUM TANK
Always look for the right size of your freshwater tropical fish aquarium. Right size means the correct proportion of tank size to the number of fish inside the aquarium. A good aquarium must also have the proper filter system, a heater and artificial lighting usually placed on top. Once it is filled with water and the right temperature is achieved for the fish not to be stressed in its new environment, the fish can already go in.

AQUARIUM BALANCE
In every form of life, balance is needed in order to survive. Even in the aquarium, this also must be achieved.

Waste matter in the tank is affected by the fish population. As a form of balance, these waste materials consume bacteria in the water thus continuing the equilibrium inside the aquarium. If you are planning to add more fish in the tank, good timing must be observed so as not to ruin the ecosystem there. If you wish to add more fish, only add up to 5 in a month. You must regularly check the water to see if it is still clear. You simultaneously do this as you feed the fish once or twice a day so you get to see the water as well. Otherwise, you have to do the necessary cleaning.

TEMPERATURE & WATER MANAGEMENT
Every week, the water in the tank must be carefully changed. Be sure to avoid chlorinated water and chemicals that reduce chlorine in water as filler for you tank because these take the color off the gills of fish and damage them. Make sure when you clean the water, you get to the bottom of the aquarium and suction the dirt out. Clean your glass tank as well. Dirty tanks make the fish behave differently agitated.

To avoid breakage of the glass tank due to change in temperature, pull out the plugs of your aquarium’s filters and heaters.

The water to be used must be lukewarm meaning it is not too hot for the good bacteria in the tank to live.

These are just few basic tips for you to have and maintain freshwater aquariums, and help you create a livable environment for your pets. Putting nice accessories into your tank makes your fish want to live the rest of its life inside your aquarium.

Enjoy your freshwater tropical fish aquarium!

Choosing an Aquarium Background

fish-care No Comments »

Aquariums do not simply mean tank, water and fish. They must have the necessary equipment or gadgets to make for a safe and livable environment for the fish. Filtration system is one of the most important aquarium equipments that any aquarium enthusiast must have. This ensures that your aquarium is filled with clean water essential for aquatic species to live stress free.

As important as it is complex, filtration systems for aquariums do best service in flushing out the wastes that are dissolved in the aquarium water. Different designs match different levels of filtration. Other filtrations devices are also available such as protein skimmers that remove proteins and waste from aquarium water.

Usual filtration system has the following:
a. The inlet for the unclean water to come in
b. Biological filtration that takes away harmful organisms and bacteria that may strike the fish
c. Chemical filtration that flushes out waste that contain phosphates and nitrogen in the water
d. Mechanical filtration that strains floating unnecessary residue in the water
e. An outflow for the filtered water to flow back again into the tank.

Aside from filtration systems, air pumps are also needed to provide sufficient oxygen for the fish to keep them from dying. These pumps also provide carbon dioxide for the plants inside the tank. If your aquarium is laden with lots of plant forms, these air pumps are a big help. Another important aquarium equipment is the aquarium heater. This keeps the temperature of the water inside the tank perfect for the fish.

Fishes in the aquarium are more likely to die without enough oxygen because water in the tank is stagnant that depletes the oxygen level. This is why air pumps are crucial and must be set in place to maintain the normal level of oxygen in your aquarium.

Aquariums, especially tropical ones with exotic fish that need tropical water temperature in order to survive, absolutely need a tool to help keep in the heat. Aquarium heaters are most suitable for this type of aquarium. These heaters have thermostats that perfectly adjust the water temperature of the aquarium to a desired level making the water ideal for fish to live in.

While there are aquarium heaters, there are also aquarium coolers, another essential aquarium equipment. These are preferably used in places where water temperature requires cooler degrees than room temperature for the fish to keep on living. This allows the fish to live more comfortably.

Of course the fish need to feel at home! Be sure to pick out an aquarium background that is a good and natural fit to the environment you are trying to create. Your fish will be more comfortable, and it will be more pleasant to look at.

Proper Fish Tank Care

fish-care No Comments »

There are several pet stores that sell aquariums that include the complete kit for easy set up for customers to simply fill up the tank with water and let the fishes out. As aquarium water clouds up a few days, a major cleanup on the aquarium is necessary.

With fish tank care, many find the practice of using vacuum and changing the water by 20-25% effective. But cleaning them this way is not really enough. A major clean up on the aquarium is needed to ensure its perfect condition. This even requires taking off the pieces of your aquarium and putting them all back again together.

To get started, you have to transfer the fish first to another tank or container that has the same water inside your aquarium so you do not disrupt the temperature setting that the fish is used to. This way, your fish will not be stressed from the transfer.

Next, using a pail, slowly drain some water from your aquarium to another holding area and gently start cleaning its parts. This is your sure way that filtration is handled very carefully. You have to do this with extra care so you will not to destroy the breed of aerobic bacteria in the water that is essential to the life cycle of plants and fishes these species developed in the aquarium. Surely, you do not want to upset its ecosystem.

As for your fish tank care accessories, take them out one by one and clean them with soap and water. For the glass in the aquarium, use a sponge. Make sure they are all rinsed well and air dried for 30 to 60 minutes before putting them back into your aquarium.

Now that you are almost done cleaning all the pieces, it is time to put everything back together. Start with the filter and then gradually put in the rocks, gravel and the plants. For clean fresh water, pour bottled water inside. The remaining water that held the filtration system can be poured back in also so long they are clean and free from floating sediments.

Once done, the last thing to do is to put the fish back in to the aquarium. But before you do so, check first the temperature of the water with a thermometer to see if the water is of the same degree the fishes are adapted to. When the water temperature of the newly cleaned aquarium is the same with the container holding the fish, you can now let the fishes swim back in.

Giving your aquarium an overhaul cleaning every two to three months is important. A major clean up of the aquarium usually takes a couple of hours to do if you a have a 10 gallon tank. The bigger your aquarium, the more time it takes to clean them up.
